Palestinian children under Israeli occupation: the imprisonment of Ahed Tamimi and beyond

d9f4af_fa88add8860e4322a75334f0089b5277_mv2A talk by Dr Jason Hart of Bath University

Tuesday 26th June, 7pm at Shrewsbury Quaker Meeting House, Corporation Lane, Shrewsbury SY1 2PB Admission Free. Open to all. Refreshments.

Currently living in Frome and employed as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Bath, Jason is an anthropologist by training. Over the past 25 years he has studied, taught and conducted research in the occupied Palestinian territories, Israel and Jordan. In his research and writing he has focused on the situation of children, particularly those affected by political violence and displacement.

In this talk Jason will provide an overview of the key ways in which the Israeli authorities violate the rights of Palestinian children. He will discuss the work of international organisations mandated to work for the protection of children under threat of abuse or exploitation, and will show how the shortcomings of these organisations’ efforts may be attributed to political calculations and fears of loss of financing.

Marking the 70th year of the Nakba

d9f4af_59f3016066034157b854b76fbebf8dd6_mv2.pngThere are two events in Shrewsbury in May and June to mark the 70th year of the Nakba in May 1948, “The Day of Catastrophe”, when Palestinians were displaced from their land following the Israeli Declaration of Independence.

The first event is from 10 am to midday  on Saturday May 19th in the Square in Shrewsbury town centre. We plan to hold keys in solidarity with the Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes in 1948.  The keys symbolize their house keys still kept as mementos by many Palestinians. There will also be leaflets to hand out to the public.

The second is from 10.30 to 12.30 on Saturday June 23rd. We shall have an information stall on Pride Hill.

Please attend either or both events. Information sheets will be provided. Please bring a key to hold – the bigger the better.
